Abortion Services
Millions of women find themselves faced with unplanned pregnancies each year. Of those women, approximately 40 percent choose to undergo pregnancy termination. The reasons for making this decision vary from woman to woman, are extremely personal, and depend on numerous factors. My Choice Medical Center staff members are not here to pass judgement, but to provide accurate abortion information and education on your available options.
One of the services provide at My Choice Medical Center is surgical abortion. This is typically performed in the first or second trimester and in circumstances where the abortion pill is not idea. As long as you seek out a reputable clinic, surgical abortion is a safe and effective procedure. In the first trimester, patients may undergo manual vacuum aspiration, which can be done under local anesthesia. Another option is aspiration, which can be done until the 16thweek of pregnancy. It is also referred to as dilation and curettage.
Once a woman enters her second trimester, medical abortion is no longer an option. There are still a few surgical options that are available. Dilation and curettage can be performed until the 16thweek of pregnancy. Dilation and evacuation is also an option for those until their 16thweek of pregnancy. In some rare circumstances, where neither of the above-noted procedures is appropriate, induced abortion may be used.
What is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill, or medical abortion, is a safe, non-surgical alternative to more invasive techniques used in pregnancy termination. This option is available to women until their 10thweek of pregnancy. There are very few risks associated with this type of procedure, making it an ideal choice for many women. They are 93 to 99 percent effective.
This procedure typically begins at the abortion clinic, with a physician administering a drug called Mifeprex. 12 to 48 hours later, the patient then takes Misoprostol, either at home or back at the clinic. The drugs work by blocking progesterone and softening the cervix.
Most women prefer to undergo this type of procedure when it is available to them. It helps to avoid surgery, leading to fewer complications and dramatically reducing the risk of infection. Additionally, it is much less invasive, which can make the procedure less traumatic.
Another benefit to using the abortion pill over surgical procedures is the relatively pain-free follow-up appointment. Typically, you only need to attend one that is held about two weeks following the initial appointment. Your doctor will give you an ultrasound and may draw blood. Unlike with a surgical procedure, there is no need for an internal exam.
