We walk you through the entire process so that you are comfortable both mentally and physically.
What is an abortion?
An abortion is the early termination of a pregnancy. Sometimes it happens on its own and is referred to as a miscarriage or spontaneous abortion. But you can also choose to terminate your pregnancy for your own personal reasons by taking an abortion pill or having a surgical procedure done.
When should you consult a doctor?
It is important that you consult a doctor as soon as possible if you think you are pregnant. If you wish to terminate your pregnancy, you will have more options available to you earlier in the pregnancy. The risks of complications are also quite lower than if it is conducted when you are way into the pregnancy.
How do you make the right decision?
Terminating a pregnancy is never easy. You, therefore, need the right abortion information and time to think about your options. Counseling may help you know what’s best for you. The best thing is to start talking to your doctor. It is also advised that you talk to someone close to you. Your options at this moment are;
- Give birth and support and raise the child to adulthood.
- Give birth and place the baby for adoption.
- Procure an abortion.
How safe is an abortion?
Abortions are conducted by qualified doctors and are very safe. Thorough medical tests are conducted prior to any abortion procedure. Therefore, very few women develop complications after an abortion. However, the best time to have an abortion is in the first trimester. This is the time you can use the low-risk abortion pill or a minor surgical procedure.
When can an abortion be conducted?
You can procure an abortion in the first, second, or third trimester. You can have a medical abortion in the first few weeks. However, after the 10th-week surgical abortion is the only option. The risks of having an abortion in the second and third trimesters are usually higher.
Some states in the US have legal restrictions when it comes to abortion. It is therefore advised that you talk to our doctors at My Choice Medical Center. Not many women have abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
Will having an abortion prevent me from having children in future?
An abortion is just like any other medical procedure and is conducted by qualified professionals in a safe environment; therefore it can’t prevent you from having children in future. You can actually get pregnant immediately after an abortion. It takes you 1 to 3 weeks to heal after an abortion, and it is advised that you don’t have sex during this time to avoid the risk of infection or getting pregnant. This is a good time to consult our doctors on the best birth control methods for you.
Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
This is the use of medicine to terminate a pregnancy. A medical abortion is done up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. A typical treatment may require two visits to the doctor. Mifepristone and Misoprostol are the most commonly used drugs for this procedure. At the first visit to the abortion clinic, the doctor will give you Mifepristone which is also known as Mifeprex or RU-486. This blocks the effects of the hormone progesterone, stops placenta growth, softens the cervix and prepares the uterus for labor. Misoprostol is administered 24 hours later and softens and dilates the cervix, and triggers uterine contractions.
Bleeding and cramping will start within a few hours after taking the second medicine. The cramps may be quite strong; you can take ibuprofen to ease the pain. Bleeding is heavier than a regular period and consists of some clots. Vaginal bleeding may last for about 14 days. Care after an abortion will include counseling, self-care instructions, information on when you should seek medical attention and birth control planning.
Many women will choose this method because it feels more natural and they feel in control of the experience. The idea of being in the comfort of your home and having a friend or family member is also appealing to many women. Though the medical abortion is a private experience, you should ensure you have a good support system when undergoing the procedure. We will counsel you before you undertake medical abortion so that you know what to expect after you leave the clinic.
Surgical Abortion
A surgical abortion terminates a pregnancy by surgically extracting the fetus. Different procedures are used for surgical abortion depending on how far you are in your pregnancy.
Surgical Procedures for First Trimester
Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) or Machine Vacuum Aspiration
This method uses suction to empty uterus tissue.
Surgical Methods for Second Trimester
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
This method is a combination of vacuum aspiration and dilation curettage (D&C) to expel from the uterus all fetal and placental tissue.
Induction Abortion
You can use this method to terminate a pregnancy in the second trimester by use of medication to induce contractions and expel the fetus from the uterus. However, a D&E is more commonly used because it has lower complication risks.
